Searching for Sabine

ANYBODY KNOW SABINE?: Suse Sligo with her the book, The Rattle Bag, and an envelope with messages for Sabine from Papa. Picture by Liam Clayton

Suse Sligo is looking for Sabine.

But she has no idea who Sabine is.

She recently bought a poetry book, entitled The Rattle Bag, which has a handwritten message addressed to Sabine.

The rest of the inscription reads:

“For your enjoyment and pleasure.

Light, life, love and laughter.

Papa.

PS: To celebrate your creative gifts.”

The book also contained a sealed envelope.

On the envelope is written, “TO THE FUTURE Sabine.”

Mrs Sligo says she is a lover of books — her home shows that — but cannot recall where she bought the book, five or six months ago.

“I go to many op shops,” she says.

She is eager to find Sabine.

There are many people who would love to keep a letter like that from their father, she said.

The inscription and envelope message was “intriguing”.

The Rattle Bag is an anthology of poems, originally published in 1982, and edited by two literary notables.

One is Irish Nobel Literature Prize winner, Irish poet Seamus Heaney and the other is former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes who is probably as well-known for his controversial relationships with wife and fellow noted writer Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill, who both committed suicide.

Hi!

My name is Sabeen and I am from New Jersey. Although I'm Muslim I grew up in the predominantly white Italian neighborhood of Hillsborough. For as long as I can remember, people would always spell my name as "Sabine". I even used to play the viola starting from 5th grade through 7th, and my music teacher Ms. Petrucelli would confuse me with another girl named Sabrina haha. Also, when I was in 6th grade, we were given an option to choose a language course to take. Randomly I chose German, not knowing that Sabine is a common variant of Sabine. And then later on in college, I took a Bioinformatics course and my professor told me that my name apparently comes from the Italian region of Sabine. Apparently there's a famous painting at the Louvre Museum called Rape of the Sabine Women. It was a little odd to hear that, but nonetheless interesting. I also am a wanderlust and LOVE to read books in my spare time. The same professor from my bioinformatics course also told me about Nick Bantock's book series of Griffin and Sabine. All of them have these special envelopes and truly engage and challenge the reader. Those are my favorite kind of books :)

There's also a famous humanitarian by the name of Sabeen Mahmoud, born April 24th. She has her own cafe named T2F. You should look her up and read about her. Her biography is truly breathtaking.

I'm also a Marvel fan and genuinely relate to Sabine Wren's character. I'm so glad they're making it into a movie. She's so badass.;)

So cool that I came by this article.

And so Susie Sligo, perhaps that note might be for me lol.

Ps: Some fun facts about me:
1) I'm an Aquarius
2) If you look up the meaning of my name, "Sabeen", you get several meanings: cool breeze of the morning, follower of another religion (in Arabic and also cited in the Quran), catlike (in Italian and French, and German). It's confusing but hey it's nice to know that at least I don't have a boring name lol.

3) When I was little, I couldn't pronounce my name fully since I couldn't speak yet. So anytime someone would ask my name, I would just say "bean". And hence, my parents nicknamed me "Beanie baby". So embarrassing lol. And obviously, I have a huge Beanie babies collection lmao.

And that's my life story:)

Hope to hear from you soon Susie ??

Sincerely,
Sabeen
