THE HMB Endeavour replica made an unscheduled return to Turanganui-a-Kiwa/Poverty Bay yesterday to drop off a couple of on-board casualties. The pair were successfully transferred to the Eastland Port pilot boat (pictured) and brought ashore to a St John ambulance.

“One of the two people was a professional crew member who strained a hamstring. The other was a voyaging crew member who had become ill,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

A 46-year-old man was admitted to Gisborne Hospital and remains there in a stable condition.

A port official said transferring the patients took a while to ensure the task was completed safely in the blustery conditions.

The HMB Endeavour resumed its journey to Picton for further Tuia 250 commemorations.
