NZH 05Apr11 - RIDING HIGH: New Zealand surfer Richard Christie blasts off the top of a wave at Waikanae Beach.

GISBORNE-Mahia surfer Ricardo Christie will hit the waves in the 2015 World Surf League’s Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in Western Australia, starting on Wednesday.

Christie will again pit his talents against 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, the man who has been there and done it many times.

Christie is a World Surf League rookie, and he faces Slater in heat 3, round 1 of the third contest.

Slater proved too good for Christie in round 1 at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach earlier in April, and hopes to turn his fortunes around after the two contests so far.

Slater is 12th on the rankings, led by Australian Mick Fanning.

Christie and Australian surfer Kai Otton are near the foot of the standings, in 31st-equal position.

Neither have made it past the two-man round 2 heats, and Christie was eliminated twice by Aussie Taj Burrow.

Christie showed his preference for bigger, more powerful waves at the Rip Curl Pro earlier this month but Burrow was in sublime form and beat the Gisborne surfer.

Christie’s education will continue on Wednesday as he looks for a heat win to progress straight to round 3.

The second and third place-getters move into two-man, round 2 elimination heats.

Huge surf is forecast for the Margaret River contest.
