Poverty Bay

Nine does not go into eight, thanks to Brad Morgan. His net 72 off the blue tees on Sunday saw him throw a spanner on the last day of qualifying for the 2016 Gary Bates Ltd men’s shootout final. Morgan is one of nine players to finish on the same best-three-rounds net total.

Eleven players are on 204 or better, confirming their spots in the 19-man field for the November 20 final. The remaining nine will contest a chip-off for eight places the day before. Those players are Tene Goldsmith, Frank Ball, Kim Travers, Nigel McGregor, Thomas Donovan, Peter Anderson, Pat Butler, Harvey Johanson and Morgan.

To make it even more interesting, the chip-off will comprise three challenges from various locations. Points (1-9) will be allocated for each and the player with the lowest total will fail to qualify. Top qualifer for the shootout final was Murray Smith (201). The other confirmed finalists are Mike Dodgshun, Roy Skuse, Marc Armstrong, Duncan Bush, Nigel Jones, Bill Allen, Sam Willock, Alan Destry, Bruce Talbot and Warwick Thompson.

History repeated in Neil Mackie’s lowest round on his home course in 20 months. Mackie won the division 1 men’s stableford on Saturday with 76-11-65, for 43 points. It was the same score as that of April 30, 2015, and emulated the nines of that day — matching 38s. Mackie capped Saturday’s effort with a two.

It would be tough to argue against the claim that Poverty Bay’s back nine holes are tougher than the front. But on the back of his weekend performance, Warwick Thompson probably could.

Thompson shot 88 on Saturday, then repeated the effort on Sunday. And in both rounds he was far better on the supposedly more difficult homeward nine. His Saturday effort (88-22-66, for 42 points), which won him the division 2 men’s stableford, featured a back nine holes of 40 off the stick and he posted 41 for that half the next day.
