Waikanae duo collect four masters titles

WAIKANAE club members Michelle “Mitch” Mitchell and Debbie Hutchings picked up medals in the masters section of the national surf lifesaving championships at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch yesterday.

Mitchell featured strongly in the 45 to 49 years women’s division, winning the ironwoman and board race.

The ironwoman age groups were run together and Mitchell finished fourth overall in a field that included Olympic Games triathlete Andrea Hewitt.

Mitchell was also third in the surf race, ski race and run-swim-run.

Hutchings scorched across the sand in the women’s 40-44 division, claiming gold in the beach sprint and beach flags.

Waikanae finished 14th out of the 30-plus competing clubs. Bay of Plenty’s Omanu were top club on 237 points.

The New Zealand championships started this morning with more than 50 surf athletes from Waikanae, Midway and Wainui in action over the three days.
