Mother Nature was in a foul mood for the East Coast-West Coast Heartland Championship rugby game at Ruatoria, throwing her toys out of the cot in the form of lashing rain, wind and a temperature which cut to the bone. While many spectators shivered in the grandstand or took refuge in the comfort of their vehicles, players got on with the job. Ngati Porou winger Jayden Milner cops a solid hit from a West Coast player in Heartland Championship week 3 action. The Coast produced a competitive display in testing weather conditions but were unable to break their drought of eight consecutive Heartland losses. Their last Heartland win was on September 10 of 2016: 36-30 over West Coast.

EAST met West in a Heartland Championship clash of the Coasts at Ruatoria’s Whakarua Park. Victory went the way of the southerners, 32-19, leaving Ngati Porou East Coast still looking for a first win in the 2017 competition.

They are second-from-bottom on the table, their superior points differential putting them just ahead of LeaderBrand Poverty Bay. The Bay and the Coast meet in Gisborne this Saturday in a local derby shaping up to be a thriller.
