HBPB off to great tourney start

HAWKE'S Bay-Poverty Bay got off to a near-perfect start at the women's national interprovincial golf tournament this morning.

HBPB, featuring Gisborne's Tessa McDonald, defeated Otago 4-1 in round 1 of the week-long competition on the Sherwood Park course near Whangarei.

McDonald, playing No.2 in the five-woman HBPB side, halved her match with Annabel Evans. It was one of two matches that ended all-square, HBPB No.1 Jaimie McIvor sharing the honours with Danielle Bailey.

The other matches all went the way of HBPB, who were sixth in the 14-province tournament last year.

No.3 Laurie Southerden won 1-up, No.4 Janie Field won 3 and 2, and No.5 Sara Deam won 6 and 4. HBPB faced Waikato in the afternoon round.
