Cherie dethrones Dad at Beach Races

CHERIE Parsons made sure the Open Race Cup stayed in her family for the ninth consecutive year at the Tolaga Bay Beach Races at Kaiaua Beach earlier this month.

She regained the trophy taken from her last year by her father Dick, who had to settle for third this time.

Cherie, who up to 2017 had won the open title seven years running, also won the Dewar Cup for the rider with the most points (16 points).

Richard Meihana won the Boy Atkins Memorial Cup for the local rider with most points.

About 3500 people attended the annual event which featured seven races, the feature race being the Open Race Cup over 900 metres.

That race featured 12 horses. The biggest field was 13 entries.

The oldest rider award went to 82-year-old Dinah Atkins who has been riding since the races started???

Rachel Kirk of Wanganui won the furtherest travelled award.
