Tahuna Irwin gave himself an early 21st birthday present when he won the Hawke’s Bay-East Coast Clubs Singles Championship tournament in Hastings last Sunday.

He beat Chris Field of Hastings 3-0 in the final, held at Clubs Hastings, two days before his 21st birthday.

Clubs from Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier and Hastings took part.

On the Saturday, the open pairs competition was held. On Sunday, the closed singles championship tournament (for clubs members only) was contested.

Game of the night in Brezz’n Darts Club winter league competition on Tuesday was between the Sharks and newly formed team Tao Matarau.

Sharks had a 10-5 win, but it was closer than the score indicates.

Sharks won the pairs section 7-2 in games that weren’t easy. Tao Matarau shook the Sharks by taking two of the first three games 2-0.

In the singles, Tao Matarau captain Ani Tangira’s win against Dylan Brown 3-1 grabbed the Sharks’ attention.

However, Dallas Joseph’s 3-0 win against Tamati Brown gave Sharks the game. Tao Matarau weren’t going to give it to them on a plate, though.

Hunter Eyles, on point, threw some great darts. He recorded a 112 start and 113 finish in his 3-1 victory over Sharks stalwart Curly Kerr, and Braiden Pokai-Giddens defeated Curly Waikari 3-1.

But Sharks anchors Missy Campbell and Ken Lewis didn’t disappoint, defeating Te Waiawa Brown and Shaolyn Edwards 3-1 and 3-0 respectively.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
