Local athletes in AIMS Games

Gisborne students were involved in the first event of the week-long AIMS Games International Sporting Championships in the Bay of Plenty.

The three-kilometre cross-country was held at Waipuna Park in Tauranga on Saturday.

The best-placed Gisborne runner was Matawai School’s Quinn Redpath, who was 36th in the Year 8 boys’ race in a time of 11 minutes 34.68 seconds.

Ty Houthuijzen (Ilminster) was 39th in the Y7 boys’ race in 11:59.89; Tui Ruifrok (Ilm) was 37th in the Y8 girls’ race in 12:43.88; and Chloe Kapene (Gisborne Intermediate) was 54th in the Y7 girls’ race in 13:29.81.

Gisborne GHS finish fourth

Gisborne Girls’ High were beaten in the third-place playoff at the Jenny Hair Cup secondary schoolgirls’ hockey tournament in Carterton. GGHS lost 1-0 to Wellington East Girls’ College.

Gisborne Boys’ High finished seventh at the Woolaston Trophy schoolboys’ tournament in Levin. Gisborne beat St John’s College (Hastings) 2-1 in their positional playoff game.

Campion College were eighth at the North Island mixed tournament in Whanganui, losing 2-0 to Stratford High School in their seventh-place playoff game.

A Gisborne Girls’ High/Campion team beat Tauhara College 3-0 to place fifth at the Rosemary O’Brien Cup tournament in Gisborne.
