Re: Free city parking trial, July 18 story.

I’m not sure if the cost of parking is the issue here or the fact that people have little money to spend.

Sadly the Mayor rejected an idea that could have redressed this somewhat a few years back when he dismissed the idea of a living wage.

If the council became a living wage employer and encouraged other employers to do likewise — by favouring those that pay a living wage in their dealings — then the retailers in the CBD may see an upturn in their business.
