Tairawhiti unknown

LETTER

I am frustrated with the bickering about “who was here first” and “our district was called Turanga/Tairawhiti.”

Well, “Maori” answers the first question. Turanga is the name bestowed on us by the early Maori settlers.

Tairawhiti extends from East Cape to Hawke’s Bay. Poverty Bay defines our area more precisely. Nobody from overseas knows of Tairawhiti. Sorry, but that’s a fact. Why don’t we refer to our district as Poverty Bay, where European New Zealand began. Tourism experts could surely use this to bring tourists in. If they wish to learn of our heritage why not start at the beginning of an era they can understand.

While I understand your point Mike... before their name changes, Mumbai, Beijing and Myanmar were known as Bombay, Peking and Burma respectively and the world got used to it so why shouldn't that happen in this case?

I think D. Smiler means Peking changed to Beijing. How many of the public have heard of Guangzhou? That is the new name for Canton. A closer analogy would be Salisbury being changed to Harare. Not just a more accurate native pronunciation but an adoption of a different language and history. Should Salisbury have had its name changed which does not so far happen in major South Africa cities? I will leave that for you dear reader to think about.

Ed note: Quite right about the Beijing comment, I've changed it now. Cheers for that.

Do you support Labour’s plan, if elected to government later this year, to co-invest up to $20 million in a prefabricated building plant in Gisborne?
