First responder training made all the difference

LETTER

This letter was originally written to Gary Stevens of the Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club. It is reprinted here with permission.

I have already sent Diego a message but I wanted to also include my appreciation to the club and Surf Lifesaving New Zealand for the first responder training programme.

If it wasn’t for the lifeguard award and refresher programme I would have not been able to do anything for the survivors of the bus crash.

As I was down the bank with the remaining injured passengers I was running through what I was taught in my head. I kept saying “what has Diego taught you, what has Mitch taught you”.

It was immensely comforting to me in the heat of the moment to know that I had some skills to do something for these people who were desperate for help and comfort.

So thank you for the lifeguard programme!

Do you agree that ratepayers in the city and on the Flats should subsidise some of the spending on rural roads in the district?
