Anger not surprising

LETTER

Re: Zaynep Ates’ letter of February 8.

In this enlightened age, to say that “survival of the fittest is the code” is not OK. Israelis only get away with it because of US backing.

I have not been to Israel, but Noam Chomsky and Ilan Pappe have. In their book “On Palestine”, published in 2015, they document the following atrocities carried out by Israel:

• Colonisation

• Ethnic cleansing

• Ghettoising the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip

• Apartheid (worse than that of South Africa)

• Incremental genocide

• A spree of indiscriminate slaughter in the killing field of Palestine during the 1967 war.

• Economic and geographic strangulation of 1.8 million people in the Gaza Strip dropped into eternal oblivion

• For the past 14 years the norm is that Israel kills more than two children per week

• 90 percent of Gaza water unfit for human consumption

• Since the ’67 war, people living on the West Bank and in Gaza are imprisoned in the biggest human “mega-prison” in modern times

• Zionism is a colonialist movement and Israel is an apartheid state.

Israel is indeed “the mad-dog” in the zone.

Is it surprising that their neighbours don’t like them?

I met Chomsky in Istanbul. I think it was 2010. Whenever someone says settlements, another one says Chomsky, so I was expecting someone to mention him at some point. I respect his arguments against totalitarian states... In the case of Israel, my attitude is pretty much like a football fan. Israel is the team I prefer.
I am not objective. The Turkey I was born in was not a Muslim country. Now it is, and it hurts. How did this happen? Endless amounts of oil money in support of the Islamic movement. Mollas putting fear of God and fear of hell into people to make them vote for Islamic parties. A very manipulative cult working behind doors, first getting the control of the HR departments, then helping their own people become judges, ministers, MPs, infiltrating the army. This is how Islamic parties that used to get 7 percent of the votes in the 1990s started to get 65 percent. They planned it for 70 years, put it into action in the last 20.
I am a humanist. That's why during my country's fall from grace, the only thing I could do was to write angry articles. You say democracy, they punch you. You say freedom of speech, they punch you. I can't punch people back - so at the end we lost the country. Very noble of us for respecting the rules of democracy. Losing gracefully, as they say nowadays. Not that it had any grace in it.
So Chomsky is great, Chomsky is graceful, but this is a dirty fight. In my opinion Israel is following a deliberate strategy to force the gulf countries to show their hands. Israel might be bad, but gulf countries are worse. Yes, fighting fire with fire is stupid, but it is already happening. We should be glad that someone is getting their hands dirty, so that we can stay as noble as ever.
