Cray closure, kina hatchery

LETTER

Having read about the goings-on in our local port, I wanted to put my slant on it. First, with regards to extending the port to accommodate more log exports and the effect it will have on small crayfish, a good idea would be to close off taking of crayfish from the breakwater to the yacht club in order to preserve our crayfish.

We should also look at developing a kina hatchery to reseed all the kina that have been depleted.

Money is available for these ventures, such as from Te Puni Kokiri, Eastland Community Trust or other sources.

With regards to congestion on the launching ramp, the council should put a digger at the marina ramp so smaller boats can launch there. At low tide it is difficult to launch as it is too shallow.
