Burglaries need to stop, be solved

LETTER

It is high time someone was held accountable for the lack of action in solving a recent spate of burglaries of businesses in Ruatoria.

Over the past four weeks, Hughie Hughes’ Electrical premises was burgled twice (goods amounting to $2500 were stolen) and then once more, with the culprits unsuccessful. So what did they do? They burgled the premises next door!

Hughie has been in business in Ruatoria for over 60 years and is a real identity in the whole district.

Since 1985/6 his premises have been burgled 30-odd times and goods worth thousands of dollars have been stolen. One of Hughie’s staff was even assaulted and left for dead a few years ago.

The lack of successful convictions for the burglaries is laughable; in many cases the situations would have made great comic-reading!

What will it take for the Ruatoria population to realise the severity of this situation?

Do you know what it is like to have to barricade yourself in your premises at night for fear of being attacked with a crowbar or a jemmy? Do you go to sleep at night wondering just what you will find in the morning? Well, do you?

Should anyone have to feel this way in their own premises?

You know that Hughie has reached the fine old age of 82 years. Is this the way you treat your elderly folk?!

Hughie has provided a great service in Ruatoria over the past 60-odd years — electrical goods, Justice of the Peace, coroner for the Coast for 30 years, leading St John for years, now the postmaster etc — supporting you and your families, and this is how you treat him in his later life? Shame on you!

There are families in Ruatoria who have benefited from these stolen goods — you know who the burglers are but you are keeping quiet about it. I am sickened by your silence and lack of willpower in bringing these thugs to justice.

I hope the scum lowlife thieves and their families who have received these stolen goods get karma ten-fold. Speak up cowards if you know who did these burglaries. To steal from a well-known identity of Ruatoria makes me angry.
