What cost to change?

LETTER

Before the council starts public consultation on the bay’s name change, I hope they will research the full costs of this action to the ratepayer. It should not be hard to find out what the Whanganui name change cost, even though it was only one letter. Was it well over $1 million as previously discussed?

How is the council planning to get a “result” to the consultation? The public gave it a clear message in The Gisborne Herald on Saturday, with 62 percent not wanting to change 250 years of history.

What I want to know is how does my opinion as a person who had paid rates for 50 years stack up with a classroom of children who have not yet lived 10 years?

Footnote: The cost to a council of a regional name change (not being contemplated in this instance) is about $10,000. Rotorua District Council said it would likely cost less than that on changing its operating name to Rotorua Lakes Council in 2014. Whanganui District Council estimated the same figure before its change, and similarly is making it gradually as signs come up for renewal and stationery needs replacing, etc. Horizons Regional Council is changing its name to Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Council and likewise estimates the cost at $10,000. Good one Margaret.
Try this for 10 year olds in a report sent to our mayor on the name change of Poverty Bay, I quote:
"The report said the Kaiti children felt the name Poverty Bay limited their aspirations and had connotations."
What do you reckon from 10 year olds? A load of rubbish and another example of teachers pushing their views via students.

I doubt that any council would get away with costs of about $10,000 when changing their operating name. The changes will consist of far more than changing signs and renewing stationary, a very simplistic view of requirements. All charges for this should be added to the costs for the changes and not hidden away as "operating costs".
