SPCA doesn’t ‘approve’

LETTER

Re: Wairoa ready to howdy NZ rodeo’s finest, March 9.

The article stating that the Wairoa Rodeo is approved by the SPCA is misleading. I can only assume that people see the SPCA’s attendance at rodeo as one of favourable opinion, but they are duty-bound to be there under arrangement with MPI (who themselves are there for compliance and not as a sign of approval).

In fact, the SPCA was one of three animal advocacy groups instrumental in helping bring together a 63,000-signature petition asking the Government to ban rodeos, and followed up with a presentation to the select committee asking for a ban. So their stance has been, and will continue to be, quite loud and clear that they do not “approve” rodeo.

People who truly care about animals do not like to see them stressed and put through potential injury just for a bit of needless entertainment. The only people who these days support rodeo are the very small rodeo community and, just for now, our present Government.

The Gisborne Herald should be ashamed. Do their reporters even take half a minute to fact-check?

I fully support Jill Latham's comments. It seems that rodeo supporters will do anything to try to prop up their dying pastime, even misrepresenting the SPCA - who are most definitely against the bullying of animals for entertainment a.k.a. rodeo. Time for this animal cruelty to end!
