A horrible, detestable title

LETTER

What a horrible, detestable title given to one of the most beautiful regions of Aotearoa by a disgruntled lieutenant sailor from England. My Collins English dictionary describes “poverty” as: State of being without food or money, situation of being unable to raise ones living standard, scarcity.

Being from a positive, forward-thinking background, I can only see massive industrial movement taking place here — agricultural, shipping, forestry and much more, all contributing to growth in living standards. That dictionary description does not apply, so why keep the name “poverty”? Delete it.

May I suggest to The Herald, if you have not already done it, do a simple, controlled poll — Yes or No.

Letters to the editor give one person’s or an organisation’s point of view. Let us start with what the people in total think and want.

They already have, and the majority voted to keep the name Poverty Bay.

Poverty Bay has been a good name, serious and ironical, for a struggling pioneer society that had to build all its infrastructure from scratch. I think it is now dated. In the global age of branding, it should be changed to Endeavour Bay.

Been there, done that! I moved to Gisborne in 1985 and the debate has raised its head over and over. Get over it!! It is Poverty Bay, as is Bay of Plenty, and Hawke's (Hawke) Bay. A bit like moving from the city to the country and complaining about the bird scarer guns banging and silage smell. Ye Gods. You'll be wanting a Gisborne currency next . . .

Do you think Wainui and Okitu should be reticulated for water and sewage?
