Abuse of children in state care requires full inquiry

LETTER

It’s absolutely not ok for any child to be abused, especially by the carers who are supposed to protect their welfare. There has been a lot of time and media content about the Catholic priests who have abused children. It is good to bring these predators to account.

However, in New Zealand many children were sexually and physically abused while in state care. Abuse has been rife in orphanages, private care homes and mental health institutions.

Many of these abused kids grew up to be abusers themselves or have lived lives of isolation, violence, crime or with mental health conditions.

I do wonder why the same attention isn’t given to these victims, as many perpetrators of this abuse have not yet been brought to account.

Our government has refused to have a full inquiry into these matters, even though opposition parties have pledged to do so. Sometimes past grievances need to be acknowledged and sorted so that the future can be brighter. Inconvenient truths need to be exposed.
