A hurtful action can destroy spirit within

LETTER

I am going to have my say on suicide.

They are not getting the point. Depression is not the reason, it is a symptom. Look deeper and it’s self-esteem.

I have lived around and with people who are depressed and the core is they don’t like themselves very much. So they self-mutilate; have bulimia; stuff themselves with comfort food; overindulge with alcohol. Some have been bullied.

Death looks better, as the hurt will stop. Or it will show them, and make them regret what they did to me.

I have had six friends murdered in three different cases. The first was through anger, the second didn’t want his family to live in shame for his debt from gambling — so he murdered them all and ended his own life. The third, no one else was going to have her.

The link? Anger; despair; frustration; lack of self-esteem — but mainly lack of communication.

Been there; thought that!

Frustration leads to anger. The prisons are full of it.

Some people who commit suicide, you just wouldn’t expect it — they hide it very well. They laugh, and make you laugh.

It takes just one unkind word to set these sensitive, loving people over the edge.

People can be so vindictive, and a hurtful action can be quick to destroy the spirit within.

I know there is help out there, and these people are trained to give support. But are some of them only giving lip service? Just doing their job and not really interested?

How can they know what people are feeling or thinking if they haven’t been through it themselves?

Liz
