Let’s fix it

LETTER

What’s wrong with this town we live in? The railway that runs south of Gisborne needs to be reopened.

The railway station has been neglected and is lying in ruins, because people of the town aren’t prepared to put their hands to the grindstone and get behind reopening rail.

Let’s fix the line and transport some of our logs by train — enough to cut the logging trucks by a third. That will make our roads safer and keep them in better condition, without all the big potholes.

Let’s use the Wa165 steam train all year-round, instead of just running it when cruise ships visit and their passengers fill the train. And let’s stop running it just to Muriwai, when there’s nothing out there where it stops.

The Wa165 has been restored to its former glory and should be running regularly through to Napier and back, because it would do that no worries.
