Rail for tourism, freight

LETTER

Re: Rail investment better economics, September 29 letter.

Surely the $4 million-$5m estimated to rebuild the damaged track between Gisborne and Napier is peanuts in today’s world. It’s not as if we asked for the track to be extended from Gisborne or from Wairoa to connect to Murupara, which would put Napier (Gisborne) on a loop (instead of a dead end).

Do what they did for the railway at Arthur’s Pass from Klondyke Corner, where the road and track were realigned (for trucks) and all the old-style bends removed — ie complete State Highway 38 with a rail corridor alongside.

Increasing freight by rail should be the option, with more flexibility for container shipping and also rail excursions. (You already have a track high on tourist routes for scenery, so spend the money and use it.) Tourism and freight.
