A few responses, and a pass

LETTER

Re: Return what was stolen first, October 9 letter.

Mr Porter, you state “Not until what was stolen by generations of Pakeha is returned in full”. Baz Davies has written an admirable riposte that quoted historical fact, not interpretation. Will Maori return to Maori what they stole? His ancestors also had much taken by conquering armies (not colonisers), but they have not dwelt on that and used it as an excuse for life’s problems.

His final paragraph was an excellent summation. It levelled the playing field and, I am certain, reflected the thoughts of many people.

Lara, I am certain our editor has more right than you or I to decide what he prints. He certainly does not need to discuss all matters Maori with kaumatua.

Mr Abbott, I am sorry if my statement was out of line. Perhaps I should have worded it more correctly. Because your views, in so many cases, aligned with mine, I thought I had a literary supporter. I do apologise.

Mike Mulrooney

PS: I see the “name change” issue has arisen again. I have written so much about this matter in the past, to very little effect. I think I will let this topic rest.

I think that dropping this subject would have to be one of your better decisions, we cannot change things and stirring the pot is not the way to go. A few beers together would be the go.
