Name and shame them

LETTER

Re: Top of the shame list, November 2 story.

Can I ask why the perpetrators of such horrific cruelty to animals are not named and shamed in The Gisborne Herald and their photographs published?

This is the second year in a row that Gisborne has had this “honour”and I am ashamed of that. I am sure I am not the only person who would like these vicious cowards identified to the people of this city.

They should be made to walk the walk of shame every time they go into town. I only hope karma will deal to these cruel morons and that they also experience some kind of retribution for their acts — and hopefully it will be painful. Hang your heads in shame, if you are intelligent enough to read this letter.

Sue Clifton

Footnote: Both of these awful stories were covered extensively, including the names of the perpetrators, when the justice system dealt with them. This latest case of the hammer attack on a dog was covered on the front page twice, after it was reported to a council meeting and after sentencing.

We decided not to punish the perpetrators again because they made this list the SPCA puts out each year as a prelude to its fundraising drive. We note also that the SPCA list does not include the names of the perpetrators. Ed
