Sign prison system is sick

LETTER

Kia ora, I am a whanau member of someone who is an inmate in the Maori Focus Unit. We received a phone call on November 25 from my cousin to inform us of his upcoming parole date, which was November 29.

We were advised at his last parole board meeting that he needed to have whanau support at his next meeting. Due to the late notice, it is likely to be unacheiveable for us to attain and return the written documentation required for entry on to prison premises within this timeframe.

We were then updated that the date had been moved forward to today, the 27th.

These are unrealistic requirements. It appears that the system is designed to make people fail. It also appears that this could be a standard practice of institutionalised racism.

The current system is sick. Something needs to change. These issues need to be addressed and concerns listened to.

How are our whanau supposed to rehabilitate and become better people when they aren’t given a fair chance?
