Why not Fulton Hogan?

LETTER

Re: Roads contract sold, November 28 story.

It is obvious to me that someone, somebody and some group needs their a.. kicked within Tairawhiti Roads/the GDC.

I believe Sse should never have been awarded the Coast contract in the first place.

My understanding is Downer did not tender for this contract in 2015. It only tendered for the western contract, but now it has the northern one as well.

Downer is an Australian company and I understand it has a longstanding relationship with SSE. I smell a rat.

My question to the council roading staff is, shouldn’t the other tenderer for the Coast contract in 2015, Fulton Hogan — a New Zealand-owned company — have been given the opportunity to re-negotiate its original tender price?

Also, why didn’t sse’s low tender price in 2015 set off alarm bells?

Fulton Hogan would have priced the work based on what it cost them to maintain the Coast roads in previous years.

Fulton Hogan did an awesome job looking after the Coast roads for many years. Why do I say this? Because I travel up the Coast every week for my mahi, driving a truck, and I have noticed since sse has taken over the Coast roads that they have gone from good to bad. It’s a goat track.

I would love to put my name to this but could get someone, somebody and some group close to me in trouble.

Sort your .... out e hoa.

Agree with you Concerned NZer!! SSE should never have been awarded the Coast contract as they proved to be out of their depth. The sale to Downer proves this and I agree that it is suspect.

I mean, what Australian company would know how to fix and maintain our roads?

As for GDC/Tairawhiti Roads (whoever you are?), what a dumb decision you made in awarding this contract!

I also believe you when you say Fulton Hogan did an awesome job looking after the Coast roads in the past. When we travelled to Te Araroa last year we noticed the many potholes, unsealed roads, slips heaps of logging trucks and whanau complaining since SSE took over.

GDC needs to stop awarding contracts to foreign-based companies before NZ companies, and awarding contracts to out-of-towners like the company building the new waste-of-money council building! As a ratepayer, I am not happy with some of their stupid decisions!!
