Store drone batteries safely

LETTER

It seems that drones might have been a popular choice for Christmas presents this year.

An issue concerning drones that is often overlooked is the lipo batteries that provide the drones’ power.

Lithium polymer (lipo) batteries can be extremely dangerous if not stored, charged or discharged properly. They can explode and burst into flame.

In January 2014 a house in Muir Street Gisborne was damaged by fire and the cause was found to be a small lipo battery. I store and transport my lipo batteries in two ammo boxes. At home I store them inside fire proof blocks, with a fire extinguisher at hand.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
