For refugees

LETTER

Re: H Block, December 27 letter.

To enlighten our confused Irish visitor Leprechaun, this building enclosed in bars near the rose gardens of our fair city (the new GDC building) is to securely house the 150 refugees from Manus Island invited here by our new Prime Minister.

You will have seen the red canoe hanging over the entrance. This is the boat some of the refugees tried to travel over the Tasman Sea to Gisborne in — coincidentally, to the same place Captain Cook first landed in New Zealand.

For your information Leprechaun, Gisborne Tairawhiti is well experienced in such matters and has the expertise to look after these people.

The new building looks more like warehouses in an industrial zone to some of us. I am astonished that GDC has rezoned Whataupoko as industrial.

Oh, I'm laughing out loud and just loving your letter, thanks Alain! A great contribution of intelligent mirth. :-) Have never met you, but in spite of the circumstances, am wishing the luck o' the Irish on you, man . . .
PS: I hope Ron Taylor has something to add also.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
