Let’s support our kids

LETTER

As I look back in time to being brought up in Gisborne, I see so much change — but not in the right direction. My mum, who is currently very ill in hospital, and my dad who I lost at 15, did so much for me and were always there for me in everything I took part in — where archery was a major part of my life growing up. I am thankful for all their help.

Now I am a single father of two fantastic kids. I stand by them and support everything that they do, which includes Dancefit and drama classes etc. I’m always there for them, like my parents were. Now they both play indoor bowls with me also. I even watch their programmes with them — the best movie I have seen with them was Descendants 2, and my little boy performed one of their dance songs in the recent Dancefit concert . . . brilliant movie, brilliant dance routines.

Pound for pound, I will stand my ground for my two children. If all parents would take a strong interest in their children, just think of the positive step this would be in the family unit.

Instead we see families heavy on drugs and alcohol and greed, causing the downfall of the family unit as well as the community as a whole.

Let’s turn 2018 around and be there for our children, and each other . . . . Make a difference.

Well said Mr Rickard, parental responsibility is key to solving so many of society's problems.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
