NZ’s longest wharf at Tiwai

LETTER

It seems I touched a sore point by pointing out in a column in the Southland Times that Tolaga Bay’s long wharf is half the length of the longest in New Zealand, which is the wharf serving the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter at Bluff.

If you Google “longest wharf in New Zealand” you get references to Tolaga Bay with, sadly, scant mention of the actual longest one.

Southland is proud to possess the longest wharf in New Zealand at 1500m. No doubt Tolaga Bay is a fine place, but please stop saying you have the longest wharf.

Mind-bogglingly stupid letter.

Didn't know it was that long.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
