Socialist fellowship?

LETTER

I can’t believe that our Prime Minister won’t support Britain and all the other nations by expelling Russian diplomats.

She considers we haven’t any Russian spies. How would she know?

I’m sure the real reason is Russia is a socialist country. When Jacinda spoke at a young socialist convention in Eastern Europe some time ago, she was freely using the word comrade. This is a common word used by Russians.

Why would the New Zealand government support the actions of other countries before there is any evidence that the Russian government was responsible for the attacks on the Russian victims in the UK?

I have no idea whether Russia is or isn't behind the attacks but the situation at this point seems similar to the false claims of producing and possessing Weapons of Mass Destruction made by US and UK leaders against Saddam Hussein as justification for the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The only 'evidence' against Russia seems to be claims made in 1991 by a Russian chemist named Vil Mirzayanov who said his country had been producing and stockpiling the group of nerve agents known as Novichoks. These suggestions have been seriously questioned by a 2011 report from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which noted: "There has been no confirmation of [Mirzayanov's] claims, nor has any peer review been undertaken in regard to the information on these chemicals in the scientific literature on this subject." Another report, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2016, said "no independent confirmation of the structures or the properties of such compounds has been published".

So before throwing stupid criticisms at Jacinda Ardern suggesting she is pro-Russia, show us your evidence that (a) Russia was behind the attack in the UK; and (b) there are Russian spies in New Zealand that should be expelled. If you don't have such evidence then keep your erroneous opinions to yourself.

Now that scientists at the Porton Down Defence Science and Technology Laboratory have been unable to establish exactly where the novichok nerve agent used to carry out the Skripal attack was manufactured, and there is no evidence linking the Russian government to the crime, will correspondents like R. Hart change their tune? Probably not, because their disdain for the Prime Minister and her decisions is not based on the facts.
