Alarmist China comments suspect

LETTER

I am suspicious of the motives behind Hillary Clinton’s warning on “China’s efforts to gain political power and influence in policy decisions in New Zealand”.

I am sure Mrs Clinton would be well aware that Labour has always been less willing than National to follow America in international affairs, right or wrong.

Under both Democrat and Republican governments, the USA herself has been found guilty in many countries of interfering covertly to gain political power and to influence policy — and, I add, waging war. And still doing it.

I will never forget the external affairs lectures I attended as a teenage conscript doing compulsory military training, when New Zealand was a US ally in the Korean War.

We were brainwashed to believe the “Yellow Peril”; that China was ready to invade us in the name of Communism. During our training exercises we were presented with leering, Oriental-faced targets to fire our bullets into, and straw-stuffed Oriental effigies to rifle-bayonet away to our heart’s content.

Now China is on track to replace the United States of America as the world’s No.1 super power and I don’t think they like it.

I think we should take Hillary Clinton’s alarmist remarks about China’s takeover motives with a rock of salt — especially now that US President Donald Trump has made this backward step of withdrawing his country from the Iran nuclear deal, and also threatened sanctions on countries which continue to trade with Iran.

Who is the bully now?
