Pine not fit for purpose

LETTER

Can somebody please explain to me why pine trees were planted on “highly erodible” land after Cyclone Bola, instead of deep-rooting native trees instead?

If the Government was serious about protecting this very sensitive land and gave a lot of money towards the plantings, why did they sit back and let pines trees go in instead of a permanent planting of native trees?

Anybody with any sense would have known that pines were always going to be harvested and wreck the land they were meant to protect.

According to NZ Forestry Owners Assn communications manager Don Carson, these pine plantings were decided upon in “less enlightened times”. What a load of nonsense! Anyone with any sense, even children, could see the error of this decision.

One can only surmise that greed took over, especially when offered so much money to plant.

Why not plant natives as a 25m band alongside gullies and streams, to capture slash and trunks and prevent them blocking these vital channels?
