Total support for nurses

LETTER

I was recently a patient at Gisborne Hospital for a knee operation and would like to commend the service I received while there. Those serving meals and cups of tea were courteous and engaged with a smile.

A special thanks to my two nurses Chrissie and Kimberly who cared for me and checked my comfort throughout my stay. They were professional and empathetic, seeing to my needs and showing real compassion for their patient. I can recall the dignity they afforded me as I was still out of it coming off anaesthetic.

I totally support their negotiations for better work conditions and would imagine at times their daily work goes by with no recognition. These nurses are the real asset to the hospital.

You're lucky getting a knee operation, lots of us have been waiting for well over a year with no end in sight. The powers-that-be say they are on top of things and ahead of projections. How can this be with less than half of the orthopaedic surgeons we're supposed to have?
I agree the staff are great and deserve a better deal, can't say the same for their leaders.
