Time to go plastic bag-free

LETTER

I wish to inform readers about single-use plastic bags, which are very common and very hard to give up.

However, the environment is pleading for help from plastic pollution. Marine life and other species are suffering and dying each day.

So, is it possible for Gisborne to ban the use of plastic bags?

The Government also needs to ban plastic bags, but we can start here — can’t we?

This is so important because our future generations will have to live with all this plastic mess and the poisons it releases into the environment.

The alternative is that we can use reusable bags.

Globally 5 trillion plastic bags are used every year — that’s 160,000 plastic bags a second.

Last year 41 million kgs of plastic was sent overseas from New Zealand.

We need to stop the use of plastic bags in Gisborne and show the country that it can be done. So let’s try to create a better community that is free of plastic bags!
