LETTER

Tena koe Jeremy,

Shouldn’t “The Gisborne Herald” be “Nupepa o Turanganui-a-Kiwa” rather than “Nupepa o Te Tairawhiti”, or are we adding Tairawhiti to the naming debate?

w. brown

Footnote from Ed:

Tena koe Wynne, te Tairawhiti matches our circulation area perfectly, so Te Nupepa o Te Tairawhiti is the ideal te reo name for this newspaper.

Naming debate? Tairawhiti is once again the accepted, commonly-used name (alongside Gisborne) for this district, as it was for hundreds of years before the government of the late 19th century decided to name our city after a colonial secretary who it seems never set foot here.

Do you think Gladstone Road Bridge should have its concrete parapet walls converted to steel railings on one or both of its sides as part of the upgrade and widening under way?
