Please advise 1080 prospect

LETTER

Could Gisborne District Council please advise our ratepayers and protesters if the planned/ considered drop of 1080 in our only water supply catchment for the city has been decided yes or no?

Our people are saying that GDC tell us all they have consulted with the public on many issues, and then do what they want. This is not proper process or democratic.

Alain JORION

Footnote response from GDC director of environmental services and protection Nick Zaman:

DoC is not dropping 1080 at Waingake and has never approached the council to do so.

The council is exploring approaches to pest control at Waingake. We will be consulting with the District Health Board, Ngai Tamanuhiri, QEII National Trusts and other stakeholders before any decision is made.

The council has not used 1080 since 2001 and would only consider its use if it was absolutely necessary and where sites are considered carefully under specific conditions. This would include where sites are inaccessible by foot and in the event of animals being infected with TB.

When you live in a rural community where agriculture is a major industry and bush is widespread, it's inevitable that the populace will be routinely exposed to powerful chemicals designed to control fauna and flora.
The answer is to go and live in a city where you can enjoy other pollutants which will also shorten your life.
There can be little wonder why so many people are queuing up to take a one-way trip to Mars in an effort escape Earth's toxic atmosphere. Problem is Mars has no atmosphere at all.

Do you support the call for a feasibility study into developing an "inland port" and sending the district's export logs to Napier Port by rail, to get log trucks out of the city and to repurpose the port and harbour area?
