Don't count chickens

LETTER

Re: No mandate to speak for the rest of us, January 5 letter.

It’s too soon to count chickens! Patricia Butler sounds suspiciously shrill when she claims that the End of Life Choice bill is certain to pass. What she means is that she would like it to pass.

If David Seymour shared her confidence, he would not have engaged in embarrassing backdowns. He knows that the bill as it stands will not get majority support. He will have to engage in some fancy footwork well beyond his performance in Dancing with the Stars to manipulate the MPs of disparate parties to support the dubious compromises he has made.

However, none of this desperate manoeuvring will change the fact that this is a very dangerous bill with many unforeseen consequences. Just one of these — the extension of euthanasia to children over time, as foreshadowed by the Attorney General’s report — will be enough to scupper it in the minds of all right-thinking MPs.

David Seymour is an embarrassment in Parliament and a borderline nincompoop. However, even nincompoops can fool all of the people some of the time.
