Real health difference

LETTER

Congratulations to the Government on the warm homes standards initiative — it’s about time.

I have been in some state and private rental homes that need serious attention.

I remember a young family who had about seven children, who told us they would often be taking a child to hospital at least once a week, due to the house being freezing cold.

Their home was made warm as part of a $5 million project funded by Eastland Community Trust and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

This project made a real difference to the health of this family, and many others, after the installation of insulation made the home warmer. The children were warm and healthy, and did not need to go to hospital.

So I have heard first-hand that warming up a home works. It’s good for the family, it saves on the health system, and the children are better able to make a future for themselves because they are warm and healthy.

It would be good for the Government to also do all its housing portfolio in the same time frame as the private sector — two years.

Warming up a home works but you need to have a home to feel the benefit. When there is no cheap bottom-level accommodation available I'm sure your voters will be cheering and dancing ... in the streets. The price of your policies will be a housing shortage for locals who can't match the chequebooks of the new arrivals. I guess that is when you will about-face and say that those policies of growth came from above you. Will the council hand over one of our parks or reserves so the homeless can organise themselves? If not, what other contingencies do you and your fellow socialists have for the homeless as our population swells to feed the corporate monopolies that you have set up shop under your watch?

Yes, warmer homes are essential to good health. As a renter my home was insulated late last year and feels much warmer, but thanks to the cost of the insulation, the earthquake induced insurance charges and skyrocketing local council rates, my rent has risen by $95 a week in the last 7 months whilst my income has remained the same. On the bright side though at least I will be warm as I slowly starve!!
