Keep the Crusaders name

LETTER

Re: Crusaders Super Rugby team proposed name change.

Has the Christchurch Muslim community insisted on this name change? No. Who or what group brought this to the public’s attention?

The atrocities in Christchurch were carried out by a maniac but to use the moment to promote a point by misinformed PC do-gooders is way off the mark. That war began in the year 1099 and the Muslims under Saladin recovered the Holy Land in October 1187. This war had nothing to do with a rugby union team in New Zealand, calling themselves Crusaders.

My Collins dictionary states:

Crusade (1) Medieval Christian war to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims.

Crusade (2) Vigorous campaign in favour of a cause.

When the Canterbury Rugby Union decided on the name Crusaders, I doubt they intended mounting their horses, galloping off to Jerusalem to recover the Holy Land. They were intent on mounting a vigorous campaign in favour of a cause — that being, to win the Super Rugby competition. No intent to go to Jerusalem, and they definitely did not want to offend any religious group. Keep the name Jane.

I agree wholeheartedly with Wiki King (April 10) in regards to keeping the Crusaders name. You can't change history and a bit of research will show that the Muslims won the last battle. Surely NZ Rugby can't be so sensitive that they think a name change will take away the hurt and sorrow created by one narcissistic, radical Australian. Keep the name and let the Christchurch rugby public support a team that has given them so much enjoyment under that name.
