More sister city spending

LETTER

Our councillors appear to easily spend our money on people from sister cities visiting for Tuia ki Turanga 250 commemorations.

Recently the paper reported the council would spend $14,660 in addition to $20,000 from the Sister Cities Committee, so “everything is paid for”. A council agenda item said a French Polynesian group of 130 will be here.

Isn’t it time to think of the importance of our sewerage upgrade, housing our homeless, help for our pensioners and an upgrade to the historic prison by Midway Beach?

To those who don’t know, we have “sister cities” in Japan, China, USA and Tahiti. We have more “friendly cities” in Spain, Italy, England, Japan and Gisborne in Australia. All nice holiday places for our Mayor and councillors.

With elections coming up, can candidates express their views on sister city spending?

Sister city spending should stop and the money used to fund urgent projects for the community, like the never-ending sewerage upgrade!
