Has Ministry of Education learned lesson?

I wonder if the Government is fully aware of the actual cost to the country of the teacher mega-strike, adding in such things as downtime for employers, disrupted parents taking time off work to look after children, and vehicle travel to facilitate other means of childcare. The true cost will have been astronomical.

Imagine what money reserves would still be in the Ministry of Education coffers, available to those teachers for resources and the help they need, if not for the litany of historical MofE building stuff-ups. These resulted from the MofE commissioning ambitious school building designs that often resulted in “Leaky Building Syndrome” — some even failed to meet earthquake requirements — and had to be demolished and rebuilt at taxpayers’ expense. This was done under the guise that students needed a “stimulating learning environment”.

It is a shame the MofE treats the “human factor” as less important than the physical surroundings.

I recall reading that for larger schools in Auckland, the remedial work was in the tens of millions — yet the lavish designs for what can be simple but effective, built-for-purpose (rather than appearance) buildings continued, despite the MofE’s own admissions that building design was overcomplicated and needed to be simplified when these rebuilds hit the headlines.

I am left wondering how many more schools still face the same fate, at the cost of actually resourcing the teachers.

Perhaps the MofE could publish the millions spent on those failed projects, having now got more spending on buildings in the Budget.

Oh dear, Oh dear Parent!
I always believed that a teacher's life was vocational. You allude to a more financial motivation for those entering this profession as you hide behind building standards.
Teachers in less privileged parts of the world just get on with it. Their motivation is the education and improvement of their smiling charges. You'll not hear them whinging of what might be, they won't go on strike and neither will the pupils.
I'd say these pupils are still taught how to think, not what to think - so refreshing. Keep an eye on Africa.

Well! As of 14th the teachers got most, if not all, of what they wanted.
I was, however, surprised by what they were already getting. The best fix is to cut out all the paperwork and reports they have to do. In my experience it gets shredded anyway!
In my job, I am responsible for 40 passengers, but I don't get $60,000.00 to $80,000.00 a year for doing it. Must be something wrong there!
What I would like to see is teachers getting back in front of the class.
