Rest of us can choose

LETTER

Good news for opponents of the End of Life Choice bill and for all of us. They can now jump off the disability bandwagon, by way of a “slippery slope” if need be, and put their minds at rest over this particular community — who will not be eligible for assistance under this bill, unless diagnosed with a prognosis of six months or less to live.

More good news. Since “coercion” is obviously a very real threat to them — perhaps past experience causing them to feel vulnerable to the machinations of their families — work is afoot on a Supplementary Order Paper guaranteed to have their wholehearted support.

All those with a history of advocacy against the bill, in particular members of the CARE Alliance and other religiously-motivated lobby groups, will automatically be registered as ineligible for assistance to die, regardless of the circumstances. Their loved ones can coerce until blue in the face — unmitigated and ongoing suffering is guaranteed.

The rest of us can have the choice enjoyed by increasing numbers across the civilised world. It will have taken a while, but finally — a “Win-Win”.

The "Care" alliance has a BIG financial vested interest in maximising the money they can strip out of an estate while someone is living his/her last days. I would far prefer to see my estate go to my wife than live in pain and delirium for months or years in a "rest" home.
