Effort to recycle 3 upwards?

LETTER

Isn’t it ironic. New Zealand has banned single-use plastic bags but, here, in Gisborne and the East Coast, we can now only recycle items marked 1 or 2, the rest goes to landfill. Shocking!

What are Gisborne District Council and Waste Management doing, if anything, to enable us to recycle items marked 3 onwards?

It's all about optics and cost. Recyclables have been going to landfill for years, just best if the "daft" recycler, tax payer, homeowner doesn't find out they are being used. Most of the plastics that trouble folk are in the ocean and emanate from Asian rivers. China features heavily in the list of top 10 plastic polluters - they are quite good at burning coal too. While we all gaze at our navels wondering how we can reduce our minimal emissions these buggers carry on regardless.

Why do we bother recycling when it has been going to landfill for years? And whose idea was it to change what can and can't be recycled? Just another waste of ratepayer $$$? As a ratepayer, I didn't vote for the latest stupid recycling idea - a bit like the rubbish stickers idea!
