Maybe they could come back and clean out the stormwater drains too. No doubt applicable all the way up the coast too. Why spend money on walkways, only to be channelled out and metal washed away because, like the rail line, lack of maintenance.

If the council stuck to its knitting: three waters, roads, footpaths, cemeteries and the like, these things would be done.
Councils all round this country get embroiled in building stadiums and grand (and ALWAYS expensive schemes) that are not the business of ratepayers!
Private interests and sports are the domain of those that use them, so user pays!
Every time there is an America's Cup either here or overseas, the Government puts money into a rich boys' sport. Did we see any advantage to Gisborne, Wairoa or almost any town away from the action? Well I didn't, and many I speak to didn't either.
Regular maintenance of council infrastructure is 101 in the book of how-to-do-it!
Crises management (unblocking a drain when it has flooded an area) is not on.

Really, a clean-up for graffiti got done in a day at Wainui? Wish GDC moved that fast for our stormwater and wastewater issues?!
