Events can be springboard for all of us to grow closer

LETTER

Edwina Ashwell spoke at the August meeting of U.3.A. and it was good to hear her speak of the events on the 5th and the 8th October. On October 5 we shall see waka in the bay and the harbour.

This will call me to remember the journey of the waka from Polynesia to Aotearoa, and to admire the navigational skills of those Polynesians who travelled the long distances from the islands to Aotearoa.

Then on October 8 the replica of the Endeavour and other ships enter the bay. Then I am called to remember the navigational skills of James Cook and his map-making skills when he had limited equipment for that difficult task.

I then will recall the journey my grandparents made to these shores many years later —and so the Endeavour is my waka.

So we truly have a bicultural event later this year. May we use these events as a springboard for all cultures to grow closer together in 2020 and beyond.
