What about staff side?

LETTER

I was in a lonely space . . .

This was the headline greeting readers on July 30th. Whilst I have sympathy for the people who were seeking help that night from the mental health unit at Gisborne Hospital, it has to be said — are there not two sides to every story? Will the staff on that night get to put their side of things forward?

In times of crisis, how one perceives responses, and interprets and processes information, can be highly subjective. It’s a very sensitive time when dealing with people in crisis.

However, in fairness to the staff on that night, I would like to hear their side. They are at least owed this.

It is my understanding from people I know, who have been involved with services at ward 11, that the staff are generally always helpful and try to go the extra mile when they can, in what can be a very challenging environment. Let’s give the staff a fair go and not a trial by media!
