Welcome, Mayor Stoltz

LETTER

Is Rehette Stoltz a Mayor or an acting Mayor? She is Mayor. The law says that if there is a vacancy in the office of the mayor it must not be left unfulfilled. That vacancy has arisen because of Mayor Foon’s resignation. It is to be filled by the council appointing one of its members as mayor, as there is less than 12 months until the next election. The council has done what it has to do and has appointed Rehette Stoltz as Mayor.

No local authority is to be without a mayor — even for three months. So Mayor Stoltz, welcome to the job.

I like Allan Hall's tidy legal explanation why the council was right to choose Mayor Rehette.
To me it is logical and maybe the best way always to choose our Mayor. That was the way in our mum and dad's birthplace, Liverpool UK, until recently.
To prevent fiefdoms of personal power, mayors or council leaders were always chosen from local elected representatives and could be changed yearly.
One big advantage would be not losing valuable, dedicate public-spirited mayoral candidates to council, as we did in our last GDC elections.

Interesting, every city has a different charter. So Liverpool, which was a small fishing village before the industrial revolution, did not have an elected Mayor until recently. Liverpool history is all about commerce and the Beatles. Is Gisborne returning to a small fishing village and tribalists?

Mr Gretton should check before rubbishing factual information. Only a fishing village? The borough of Liverpool was founded by royal charter in 1207 by King John ... as a trading port with Ireland and coastal parts of England and Wales, later to trade with Africa and the West Indies. Also, Liverpool was not alone. The custom of councils choosing their own Mayor was common practice in England, Scotland, Wales and Europe in the not-too-distant past.
