A new mayor required

LETTER

To end further misinformation about the recent mayoral appointment, we would like to emphatically state Rehette Stoltz will be the mayor, not the acting mayor.

With the current mayor stepping down less than 12 months before the election, the council was legally required to appoint a new mayor until the election.

Section 117 (5) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 states “Despite subsection (3), if the vacancy is for the office of mayor, the vacancy must not be left unfilled but must be filled by appointment of one of the other members of the local authority as mayor.”

Councillors unanimously agreed to appoint Rehette Stoltz.

What the hell does a director of internal partnerships do?

Phil Hunt, Picton - 3 days ago
Lloyd, you learn something every day! "Once-upon-a-time" they had a job called "Town Clerk", now it's CEO.
Just see what that has led to in Christchurch!

To Lloyd's question, the GDC website states: "Internal Partnerships drives the positive culture of Council and contributes to the ongoing emphasis of being a customer focused.....". James Baty is simply doing his job, as were the councillors who unanimously appointed Rehette Stoltz to the GDC Mayoral vacancy.

Long ago he would have been the Personnel Manager, a bit later on he'd be the Human Resources Manager, the latest incantation of this ordinary job title is much more hifalutin. Director of Internal Partnerships, wow, who wouldn't want to be one of those?
A friend was recently commenting on staff increases at the council. He opined that they've all been given swanky new titles, swanky new wages (how coarse, they are probably receivers of emoluments now) and the obligatory new car.
Result? The car park is overflowing, they are all far too elite be bothered with riff-raff ratepayers, ballooning debt levels and best of all crippling annual rate increases to pay for it all.
All this while service declines and esoteric project letting booms.

Sure looking forward to coming back home to Gisborne.
